I am not a wasteful lady. i believe you should pretty much keep something, revamp it, reinvent it, make it work, until its pretty much dead. but i also am a lady that likes pretty things and things that look nice and fit well. while frugal and earth concience, im not willing to sacrifice everything for that. i wanna be purty! and i want my house to be purty too! and i also want to have moolah in my pocket... sounds like its time to learn to dye some stuff i said to myself when i looked at our boring tan towles in the nest.
so i tried to dye some towels via the directions on the rit website for front loading machines. it did not work. at all. those arent moldy....they are a georgous apple green! cant you see that?! yeah me neither. then i moved to a place with a top loader and it worked great. my only complaint is that they have faded sooooo much now that weve been using them for a while. i could always redye them i suppose. but how many times can you do that before you start thinking that you shoulda just bought new towels? they also bled for ages. onto everything we washed them with. below is them all new out of the dye bath. thats quite the transformation huh?!
Then my friend at work liz said "hey my neighbor was trowing this out and its got a strange stain or light bleach spot or something on the front but i thought maybe you could fix it." and i loved the way it fit so i thought "YEAH! gimmie that trash can shirt and watch me work!" one bottle of brown rit dye later and heres what we have. i LOVE this shirt and ive worn it a ton. its a really pretty maroon color and drapey and lovely and i thought that putting it in the hot water for 30 minutes would wreck it but it didnt at all and i have since handwashed and hang dried this without incident.
all in all im not really happy with the towel dying experiment but thats what this blog is about. successes and failures in crafting and life. they cant all be winners and youre not alone in your fails lol. i still dont really understand how this dye stuff works or if its worth the trouble but i like the way my shirt came out. so maybe if its stuff youre gonna hand wash but not stuff like towels? if anyone has any tips or tricks here id LOVE to hear them cause the potential for me to really enjoy revamping things with dye is mighty.

id made a loaf from bobs red mill gluten free bread mix the week before and it came out pretty well but wasnt really any cheaper than just buying a loaf of gluten free bread already made from the store. (so i wont be doing that again). it had the same issue most gluten free breads have. which is the "stale" portion here. its not stale at all. its really really crumbly after the first few days and what are you gonna do with that. sandwich making potential has gone out the window.
Luckily i am also a creative cook. Gluten free bread gets kept in the fridge and it was "stale"...well going "stale" and its too pricey to waste so heres what i did. this recipe is gluten free AND vegetarian
- 4 pieces of "stale" gluten free bread (or any kinda this cut staleish bread if youre not gluten free)
- 2 bell peppers diced
- 1 onion diced
- 1 pkg mushrooms sliced
- 1 zuchini quartered and sliced
- 1 can ranchero sauce hot
- 1 can black beans (drained and rinsed)
- manchego cheese 4 oz grated (or any kinda cheese you like really)
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- salt and pepper to taste (i like the fine ground white pepper)
- cooking spray
- olive oil
- 2 baking dishes. one large adn shallow and one bread pan shaped
- open a package of mango frozen cocktail cause its summer, its HOT, and you're about to turn on the oven for at least 30 minutes. they are tasty like a popscicle and my new favorite. the ones i found are something like this but come in a gogourt kinda packaging and they are much icier which i actually like.
- preheat your oven to 400 and spray both your dishes.
- in the large pan put all your veg. pour in a little olive oil and all your seasonings. roll the veggies around to coat them and mix them up. cook for 20 min.
- crumble 2 slices of bread (large chunks) into the bread pan pour on 1/2 the ranchero sauce, 1/2 the beans, 1/2 the roasted veggies, and 1/2 the cheese.
- do another layer just like that one ^
- slap it back in the oven and keep an eye on it. you want the cheese to start to brown. maybe like 10 minutes.

Its almost that time of year again!!! best holiday in the whole wide UNIVERSE is approaching and as i was thinking of what i might like to be this year i had the realization that i never posted my cosume from last year. its nothing super fancy but im really happy with how it came out.
I was inspired by this make up that i saw on pinterest. unfortunately it would seem that all the links to this gals blog post are broken. i really wish i could give her the appropriate props but alas. just know the blue cat pix are not mine and the idea for this get up and hat were spawned by this creative ladys post where ever it lives on the internet these days.
Lets start with the makeup. ive never done anything like this before so after much searching i discovered that if you use good make up brushes and any pan eyeshadow that can be used wet or dry (not just any old eyeshadow will work wet) along with this stuff called ben nye liquiset it makes a paint that drys matte and you practically have to chisel off with a hammer at the end of the night. i danced i sweated i bounced around and my makeup was as pristine as when i left the house...one contact was drooping sideways but thats another story. its SOOOOO awesome in fact that i have since used it regularly to turn eyeshadows into eyeliners that can stand up to boogying at the club all night. just be sure you wash your brush right away or it gets too crusty to fix.
so theres the make up and you can see my contacts. they were only 12 bucks at a regular beaty supply store which is awesome. They also were sideways all thing long lol with is fine. it was even creepier and i couldnt tell by looking through them. my one eye with a bigger astigmatism had more sideways contact than my "good eye".
The gal made her hat by knitting it but im WAY too slow of a knitter so i pulled out my crochet hook and carried 2 yarns together at a time. essentially you make a LOOOOOONG rectangle and fold up the ends to make pockets for your paws. you can see that i sloped the front out so that my head could be a little more covered. sew a few unches down the back to make the hood and attach 2 triangles for ears. thats as good of a pattern as i have guys. sorry i just winged it. i used every yellow black and grey yarn i had in my stash for this bad boy inspied by the fact that i could only find yellow contacts ;0). took me about 6 hours to make this.
i just wore a black sweatshirt and black yoga pants and called it good. this was a creepy and comfy costume and im really happy with how it came out.
** edited to add that a nice pinner found the gals deviant art page and shared it with me. heres where i got the inspiration for this!
